What does it look like to be ‘conformed to the world’ around us. We looked at how the world looks, speaks and acts differently to those who follow Jesus and how easy it can be to conform. But we are encouraged by Paul to “be transformed and progressively changed” (Romans 12:2 AMP) and this week, I want to ask you the question, are you being conformed or transformed?
I love a good home improvement programme and one of my favourite films when I was younger was The Princess Diaries! There is something so exciting about a transformation process and the affect it has on people; they start to look, speak and act differently to before.
The word that Paul uses when he says ‘be transformed’ actually means ‘metamorphosis’ in Greek. Metamorphosis is what happens when a caterpillar turns into a butterfly - it is a permanent, outward change, due to what’s happening on the inside. A butterfly can’t turn back into a caterpillar and similarly, we can’t turn back to our old ways of thinking, speaking and acting after we’ve met with Jesus. We will be transformed through reading the word, and allowing the Holy Spirit inside of us that produces changes on the outside of us.
But what are we being transformed into? We are being transformed in a whole, complete, mature, beautiful, glorious new creation that LOOKS LIKE JESUS.
Looking Transformed- We will look different to those around us- we know that our value and others’ value comes from more than just outward appearance.
Speaking Transformed- Our words will encourage, build up, speak well of others, be true, gracious and loving.
Acting Transformed- We will act in love and compassion and there will be some acts that we will have to say no to as well.
2 Corinthians 3:18 says, “And we all are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
My prayer is that we start to look, speak and act differently as we continue to walk with Jesus. I pray that you let His word and Holy Spirit change you permanently from the inside out, so that when others see you, they see HIM.
Next time we are going to look at HOW we are transformed!
