Rhythms

Lads,

Summer is very nearly upon us! Massive congrats to those of you who have finished your exams and are relishing the holiday before you, but first I want to lay down a challenge to you all. Get in rhythm.

I’ve been chatting with a few friends recently about the importance of rhythms in our relationship with God, and you might remember the Bible Email on Sabbath Rest which was partly inspired by those chats!

I think there is a huge power in the habits that shape our day, in fact Galatians 5 identifies self-control as one of fruits of the Spirit, and I want to encourage all of you to use this holiday to set in place some powerful habits to help boost your relationship with God. This could mean getting into a new Bible reading plan (email me if you want ideas!), or developing a new way to pray (see the 52 Ways to Pray blog on the website). Or it could mean getting stuck into something your church is doing during the week and seeing God move in your community.

Whatever it is, ask God to inspire it in you, that the Spirit might teach you new ways to take your relationship with Jesus to the next level. The Message translates Jesus’s message in Matthew 11, wonderfully:

28-30 “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
