I have been really struck since starting the Stewards’ Trust at how much it operates like a loving family. It says in the Bible that God is our heavenly father. We are His children and brothers and sisters to each other. It’s so good to know this, especially in a time of division and disunity. There are several ways that I think we can relate to one another as family:
“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing”- 1 Thessalonians 5:11
In a functioning family, each member wants to see the others flourish and thrive in whatever they are doing, whether that is school, work, leisure or even retirement! The way that this often works out is through affirming and encouraging each other’s strengths and callings, and faithfully challenging each other to fulfil their potential. Sometimes as lads we can discourage each other through the guise of “banter” when there’s very few of us who come away feeling unaffected by the words of others. Be encouragers of each other!
2. Dealing with conflict
“Strive for peace with everyone and to be holy”- Hebrews 12:14
I’m sure lots of you will have siblings and so dealing with conflict is something you have experienced! Conflict can be caused by many different factors and situations but the most common root I have found is the need to be right. Peace is a fruit of the spirit (Gal 5:22-23) and wherever we go we can avoid unnecessary and chaotic conflict by bringing peace into any tension when it inevitably arises. Next time you are faced with a situation where conflict begins to bubble, try and find ways to sow peace.
